FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

*What does 'licensed' mean?

The state of Texas issues a child care home a license when the home meets the health and safety standards set forth by the Health and Human Services of Texas. The license ensures that the teachers/caregivers meet all requirements including education, background checks, safety procedures, etc. On-site inspections regulate and monitor the school continually.

*What curriculum does the school use?

The curriculum is self-made using years of experience as a homeschool mom, public and private school teacher, a degree in Sociology, education certificate, and being a state of Texas certified teacher. 

The children are instructed explicitly with phonics and math using a methodical process. Natural curiosity brings about daily learning opportunities that create an interdisciplinary atmosphere. The curriculum for all subjects becomes a collection of many different thoughts, ideas, sources, etc. 

The School of Thought follows the state guidelines, too. The state of Texas has the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) that are used for all ages of school children. *What ages can attend the school?

Children from the ages of 2 1/2 to 12 are able to attend. Licensing allows for younger children, but the school's focus begins with preschool ages. Texas does NOT require children to attend kindergarten. School attendance is not officially required until first grade. At that time parents can choose homeschool, private school, or public school. The School of Thought welcomes children for educational purposes in preschool or kindergarten. Homeschool parents are welcome to discuss attendance, too, for specific subjects or for parents' time to work or do errands.

*What is the tuition for the school?

The monthly tuition is $1,200 for full time children. Children who attend part time pay half that price. Extended hours on Friday and Saturday evenings cost $10 per hour/per child. Drop-in children may also attend with all the required forms complete.

*What does the tuition cover?

The tuition covers the yearly rate for the school averaged out in monthly payments. A $300 deposit is collected at the beginning of each school year (August) to ensure a space for your child. Meals and snacks are included as well as the occasional free evening of child care. Parents only need to bring a special sleep mat, water bottle, extra clothes, and diapers/pull-ups. 

*What is the protocol for sick children?

All children that attend the School of Thought must be vaccinated.  Children with any illness symptoms are monitored and parents are called if necessary. The school follows the required licensing procedures. See the further explanation in Policies and Procedures.

*What are the provided meals and snacks?

Children will receive healthy food at the school. Most often it will be whole foods that are not processed. A set menu will be used each week; yet, if your child is not happy with a meal a simple substitute can be used, if permitted by parents.

*What if my child has allergies?

Licensing requires a list to be kept hanging on the wall for teachers to see daily. Upon admission to the school parents complete a plan to follow if their child comes in contact with an allergen. An unassigned epi-pen is at the school in case of emergencies (pending acquisition). 

*How are behavioral issues addressed?

The philosophy is to model and teach expectations explicitly so children understand appropriate behavior. Natural consequences are used for helping children learn to become self-directed. The Discipline and Guidance Policy has an extended explanation. 

*Are visitors welcome at the school?

Parents are permitted to be at the school any time without prior notification to see their child or the school grounds. Other people are permitted to visit but absolutely never left alone with the children.

*Do you administer medicine?

It is highly recommended that parents give all medicine to children. The first two doses of a new medicine must be administered by parents in case there is an allergic reaction. Medicine that cannot wait to be administered by parents may be given at school with the correct documentation from the health professional and the school.

*Do you have pets in the school?

There are pets at the home. There are two dogs (Australian Shepherd & Dachshund), two cats, and two guinea pigs. The school believes that animals are a valuable part of people's lives and are a wonderful thing for children to experience. There will be times the dogs will be put in their kennels, such as mealtimes. They are fully vaccinated and healthy with paperwork kept in a binder at the school. 

*Is it ok that my child wears diapers or is potty training?

Of course! Parents provide the diapers and method of potty training that is working at home so that it can be continued throughout the day at school.
